The 5th season

It’s fall already, can you believe?

The summer is over, the leaves are turning and the sun goes down faster.  Do you know that in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) they recognize this as the 5th season. They call the transition between late summer and beginning of fall, the 5th season.

This season is known as a very crucial time to attain wholeness and balance especially to prepare for the rest of the year.  It is believed that this time of Indian summer corresponds to the element Earth. With this transition we are preparing for harvest and then for the winter season. The summer is filled with lots of activity and fun which is starting to slow down a bit.  When we think about transition, we realize that food plays a huge part in this cycle. The body is really in need of nourishment every season but this season in particular is important.  We must eat to aid in digestion for the stomach and the spleen, which has a direct correlation on your digestive health. By now you must also know the significance of the Full Harvest Moon for me. Each September I usually add it to my September Blog post.  The Harvest Full Moon is when you plant your intentions for the upcoming year. Yup, I actually plant, like in the dirt my intentions. Want to know a secret, it works.

I just learned about this 5th season and wanted to bring you the information so you can look at midlife transition the same way. You must prepare for it and you must eat to nourish.

It is important to stay away from as much sugar as you can, eat well and eat with people. Let’s start with eating well. We want to avoid sugar at this time. You want to really pay attention to this as it aids with the pancreas. Smart sugar like in apples, dates and figs are encouraged. It’s also not just about what you eat but how you eat at this time.  In The ML Method, we speak about being mindful in all you do. When we eat we suggest no TV, nothing that would upset you. It is equally important to try to share meals with people you love at this time. Community meals are encouraged.

Here are a few suggestions for food: Apples, cabbage, carrots, dates, figs, grapes, kidney beans, lettuce, olives, peaches, pears, string beans, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and walnuts. Pay attention to how you eat, slow down and savor. Invite people you love over and share a meal. Go out to eat but really enjoy the time with family and friends.

I hope this 5th season finds you balanced, well nourished and preparing for the fall.

Everything matters in midlife, YOU matter

Maria
