How to remain strong in midlife?

To date there are more than 84.1 million boomers currently living today according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

To date we are the biggest population.

I thought I would take a moment to discuss how we can remain strong and healthy in our 50’s and beyond. What does strong mean? Physical strength, bulging biceps way into your 70’s, being able to stand on your own without a walker while your in your 80’s?  That may be your goal.

Mental Strength, being able to take care of yourself, your family, maybe grandchildren and perhaps aging parents. That might be your goal.

Emotional Strength? Dealing with the aging body, feeling somewhat less energetic. Coping with the changes that come with family growing perhaps leaving the home. Retirement is another emotional time for many. Empty nesters are now faced with reinventing their relationships and being alone.

My thoughts on strength in midlife encompasses all of these factors. Yes, I want the mental strength to be able to still do it all, take care of me, my family if they need me and my aging parents. Let’s not forget I am praying for grandchildren.  I want to know that I can handle whatever comes my way. I want to be mentally strong for my children, their children and for my parents who at this time aren’t as mentally strong.  I want the physical strength so that my body, my vehicle will carry me to my ripe old age of 100.  I want to remain independent, able to take care of myself so I don’t have to burden others. I want to be able to walk by myself. Take care of my own home.

I want the emotional strength so when I am alone I can really feel content. I am not depressed or down because of my aging body. I want the emotional strength to be able to handle whatever comes my way and have an inner knowing that I will handle this. I want to have emotional strength for my family so they can always have a shoulder to lean on. I want to be able to feel emotionally happy and content as I age.

All these variables are what strength in midlife means to me. Inner strength and outer strength.

The choices and the cumulative actions we make today are going to take us to our tomorrows.

Here are my 5 tips on how to stay strong:

  1. Gratitude Journal every day. Wake up every morning and feel blessed that you were given another day. Spend some time in reflections on all the things, people you are grateful for.
  2. Move Move Move, Whatever that looks like for you, just move. Walk, clean, dance, move and appreciate every part of your body. Stretch and strengthen your vehicle so that it serves you later in life.
  3. Find something you are passionate about, a hobby. Reinvent yourself. Try different things until you find the one that you are really excited about.
  4. Learn to be alone and be content with yourself.  Think if you are older and you can’t get out. What will that look like for you? You are your own best friend. Be bold and brave daily. Strengthen that muscle so you can always know you are going to be ok.
  5. Give to others as much as possible. Giving strengthens our emotional strength and mental strength. Do something for someone everyday
